What to Look for When Assessing Your Current Suspension
What to Look for When Assessing Your Current Suspension
If you have ever driven in a homemade cart as a child, you will have some idea what it would be like to have a vehicle without a suspension. You would feel every bump in the road, and the jostling and vibrations would likely loosen all of the bolts and fasteners holding your little vehicle together.
Years later, you’re all grown up and drive a modern vehicle. How would you assess your current suspension to avoid those bumps, making sure that it is doing its job correctly?
How to Diagnose Worn Leaf Springs
One of the easiest ways to tell if your leaf springs are worn or saggy is to have your vehicle parked on an even surface and then look at your car or truck at the front and the back to see if one side is sitting lower than the other. If it is, then you would do well to further inspect the leaf springs to see if they are loose due to settling, damage or cracking, distortion or excessive wear. All of these could be the cause of your vehicle sitting lower on one side. If you can't tighten them in place, then look into replacements for the good of your vehicle.
When it comes to determining if you need to increase the load capacity of your leaf springs, there is nothing more obvious than observing them in use under a heavy load. If your vehicle is loaded with a heavy weight and you find that the vehicle is sitting too low such that it bottoms out when you are going over bumps, you may need to purchase bigger leaf springs that will carry a heavier load. This can sometimes become necessary if you are attaching a heavy trailer or installing a snowplow onto your vehicle.
